The church is a cathedral Orthodox temple of the city.
According to some information the church of Alieksandr Nievski was rebuilt in the style of eclecticism in eighteen seventy from a church of Bernardines which was burned out in eighteen fifty eight. Today the church is the cathedral Orthodox temple temple of the city. A stone fence and a gate with buildings which are situated near it remained around this temple. German soldiers were buried over apse of the church during the Second World War. The church looks toward the historical market square of the city which is occupied now by a public garden. This building is the outstanding example of Eastern Orthodox architecture in Belarus.
