Academician, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist of the BSSR Vasiĺ Kuprevič began his research activities in the Smaliavičy District of the Minsk Region. It was here that he was a teacher at a local school.

Vasiĺ Kuprevič is a famous Belarusian botanist, born in 1897 in a peasant family, graduated from a rural school, and in 1913, from the Smaliensk Agricultural School. In the summer of 1918, he returned home from military service. In 1931, he graduated from the Institute for Advanced Training of Public Education Staff in Moscow. In 1934, he defended his candidate dissertation, and in November 1941, in Leningrad, his doctoral dissertation. In 1934–1938, he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of Biological Sciences of the BSSR Academy of Sciences, in 1938–1949 he was the head of the laboratory at the same institution. From 1949, he headed the Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From January 5, 1952 to March 17, 1969, he was President of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR.

Vasiĺ Fieafilavič Kuprevič started his research activity in the Smaliavičy District of the Minsk Region, being a teacher of the Smaliavičy seven-grade school. That is why on June 18, 1969, the secondary school No. 1 in Smaliavičy was named after Vasiĺ Fieafilavič Kuprevič. Since 1987, the school has had a memorial museum in his memory. In the museum, you can see the books “Brother of Aurora” by Max Singer and “Moonzund” by Valentin Pikul, which mention the sailor of the Baltic Fleet, the future President of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR. There are preserved magazines of the 1920s – “Enlightenment”, “Our Land” and others – with the first articles by the enthusiastic teacher. There are personal belongings of the scientist in the museum: glasses, a typing machine, a hood and a catalog cabinet with thousands of cards about the nature of viruses, written by his hand.
