The Smaliavičy Central District Library was founded in 1925. It was based on books from the private libraries of local landowners. In 1928, the district executive committee began to allocate resources for the acquisition of the fund. Until 1933, the library had one employee – the head of the library. In the same year, an additional staff member was introduced – a librarian. In 1938, the library had more than 12,000 copies of books, but in those years the acquisition was irregular.

From 1936 to 1940 the library was located in the building of the district House of Culture and occupied two rooms: a subscription room and a reading hall. In 1940, the library had more than 16,000 books and was used by about 600 readers.

The library was burned during the German occupation. After the liberation, the collection of books began almost from scratch. By July 1, 1947, the library had more than 9,000 copies of books and about 400 readers.

In 1949, when the library had a book fund equal to that in 1940, it burned down. Library staff and readers have done a great job of restoring it. In 1957, the Smaliavičy district library was named after Maksim Bahdanovič.

In the 21st century, the library uses new information and technological capabilities in its work. Thus, in 2014, the institution began to serve visually impaired users. The fund of the voiced literature was formed, the club “By a Candle” is organized. The library is gradually computerized and actively works with the public.
