The Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1867 according to a typical design of Russian architecture of the 17th century. In 1934, the church was destroyed by the Soviet authorities. The new Church of St. Nicholas was opened to believers in 2003.
Initially, the silhouette of the Church of St. Nicholas was dominated by an onion-shaped "inflated" dome on a light cylindrical drum. A stone chapel was built on the right side of the church in 1889. The church was surrounded by a wooden fence with brick pillars. To the left was a shop selling candles and spiritual books.
The St. Nicholas Church was located in the city center, on the site of the modern Sianno secondary school No. 2. In 1934, it was demolished. In 1935, the House of Culture began to be built from these bricks, which is still standing today. A park was laid out on the site of the church, and monuments to the communist leaders Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin were erected and stood until 1941. In 1961, a school was built on this site, which still operates today.
The first stone in the foundation of the new St. Nicholas Church was laid in 1998. Construction work has been going on since spring 1999. Since 2003, public worships have been held in the temple.
