Among the many art galleries in the country, the art gallery named after Haŭryla Vaščanka occupies a special place. The artist's works form the golden fund of the Belarusian national art of the mid-20th – early 21st century.
Haŭryla Vaščanka was born in Paliessie. His native places inspired him to create many works dedicated to the nature of Belarus. Vaščanka received recognition in 1957. Over time, he received the honorary titles of Honored Art Worker and People's Artist of Belarus, and also became a State Prize laureate. The works of Haŭryla Vaščanka are widely known beyond the borders of Belarus. The artist died in 2014 and was buried in Minsk.
The art gallery was opened in 2002 during the artist's lifetime. Its first exhibits were 50 works by Vaščanka, which he presented to Homieĺ. Later, the exhibition halls were replenished with paintings that were given to the gallery by the artist's wife, Matyĺda.
Nowadays the art gallery is divided into two buildings: the gallery itself and the exhibition hall with an art salon. The number of exhibits in the gallery is about 400 items, now there are not only works by Vaščanka, but also by other Belarusian artists. The gallery has become a place for children's creative development: there is a children's studio of fine arts and a children's studio of figurative and sculptural modeling.
The art gallery also cooperates with the embassies and institutions of different countries of Europe and Asia, which allows the exhibitions organizers to demonstrate paintings and products of foreign artists.
