Monument to Belarusian and Eastern-Slavic printing pioneer Francysk Skaryna.
Monument to Fracysk Skaryna in Polack was established in 1974. Famous Belarusian sculptors Andrey Zaspitski and Aliaksey Hlebau are the authors of the monument. The height of bronze sculpture together with base is twelve metres. It’s the first monument to a first printer in Belarus. Fracysk Skaryna was born in Polock at the end of fifteenth century (about 1490). He was studying in Krakow, became a doctor of medical sciences in Padua. Francysk Skaryna was translating into Belarusian language and printed the main Christian book, the Bible in 1517 in Prague. His editions are notable for high quality of print, distinctive artistic, engraving and fancy adornments, type and other components of publishing aesthetics and mastery. For each translated book he wrote special prefaces for Belarusians could better understand Word of God. Work of Skaryna noticeably influenced on spiritual culture of Belarus and Ukraine and also on rise of printing in neighbor countries.
