The Mahilioŭ History Museum was founded on July 16, 1990. But it opened its doors to visitors only in 2002.

The Mahilioŭ History Museum was supposed to be located in the building of the former archbishop's palace – an architectural monument of the end of the XVIII century. However, in 2002, the palace was transferred to the Mahilioŭ Eparchy of the Belarusian Orthodox Church.

In May 1999, the Mahilioŭ City Executive Committee allocated the first floor of the building at 13 Vulica Lieninskaja to house the museum's office space and exhibition hall. There, in 2002, the museum received its first visitors. At first, there were non-permanent exhibitions. In November 2005, the exposition "Mahilioŭ of the Magdeburg Law, XVI–XVIII Centuries" was opened. In 2008, the Mahilioŭ History Museum moved to the rebuilt city hall. This building is located in the historical center of Mahilioŭ and is the venue for city celebrations and official receptions of the city executive committee. The exhibition halls of the museum are located on two floors.

The museum presents objects of the X – the early XX century related to the history of Mahilioŭ. The museum acquaints visitors with the main stages of the historical development of the city, with its medieval culture, ways of life, confessional history and private life. There are 5 permanent exhibitions. Among the main attractions of the museum there are the original Statute of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of 1588 and the book "The Great Art of Artillery" of 1676 by Kazimir Siemianovič, acquired thanks to the diligent work of the museum director Aliaksiej Baciukoŭ.
