Braslaŭ Traditional Culture Museum

The Traditional Culture Museum was found in 1991 and was named then the Braslaŭ Craft House. In 1997, it was renamed as the Craft Museum, and since 2001 it has been bearing the name of the Traditional Culture Museum.

The museum building is located in the historical centre of Braslaŭ on the side of one of the largest Belarus lakes – Dryviaty. Now there is one permanent exposition and two portable ones. Altogether, the number of exhibits comprises of 180 items composing the main fund.

The exposition presents the wickerwork history, ethnographic items woven with different materials, craftsmen’s photos and their works of the mid-to-late XX century. In addition, the history of building, set in the early XX century, the woodcarving history (the exposition says about main stages of the carving development) are presented. Part of the exposition is dedicated to weaving, it introduces the main stages of its development, flax processing devices and traditional fabrics collections. The pottery history of the Braslaŭ Region from the ancient times to the present is shown in an interesting way.

The research work carried out by the museum is based on collection and study of traditional craft technologies: national cuisine, restoration of traditional costume, local technologies of valenki boots felting.

The museum holds such cultural events as traditional crafts classes, oriented to learning traditional crafts technologies; workshops on traditional crafts, which include making birds of straw and whistles of clay; workshops on using potter’s wheels. Once a year the “Night of museums” is held to introduce the night-time museum. Crafts fairs and youth events are held in the summer months.
