The building of the Academy of Veterinary Medicine (the former building of the Peasant Bank) is an architectural monument of the early 20th century. Today, the building houses the main building of the Viciebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine.
The building of the Peasant Bank was built in 1917 according to the project of the civil engineer K. Tarasaŭ in the pseudo-Russian style, combining both the features of modern and eclecticism.
The stone two-story building is flanked on three sides by towers. The tower at the corner of Baŭmana and Davatara streets stands out for its scale. The elements borrowed from ancient Russian architecture (curved outlines, corbel archs above windows, melon shape columns, etc.) were used in the decorative finish.
Today, the Viciebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine, which was founded in 1924, is located in the building of the former Peasant Bank. This educational institution has gone down in the history of the city as one of the most senior universities. For almost a hundred years, it has been training qualified veterinarians, pharmacists, veterinary and sanitary experts, and animal engineers.
In 2011, the Academy of Veterinary Medicine has its own attraction – a monument to the veterinarian (sculptor Ivan Kazak). In Belarus, this is the only bronze sculpture that honors a veterinarian. The sculptural composition consists of a doctor surrounded by animals: a dog and a calf – a parrot is sitting on the doctor's hand.
