The first hydroelectric power plant in Ašmiany was built in 1918.

The power plant was built in Ašmiany at the end of the First World War. In 1918, the German occupation authorities transported it from the river Loša and installed on the site of a wooden mill which had been destroyed during the combat actions. When Ašmiany was occupied by the Poles in 1919, the power plant was in operating condition but did not work due to the lack of greases. In 1936, the Ašmiany power plant was one of the 5 power plants of the Ašmiany poviate. Besides it, power plants operated at the yeast plant in Ašmiany, in Aĺšany, Smarhoń and Soly.

The building of the city power plant, which has survived to this day (near the bridge to Baruny, on the left bank of the river Ašmianka), was built in 1927. A new turbine was installed at the power plant in 1931, the length of the lines has been more than 9 kilometers.

The city power plant was slightly damaged during the Second World War. The hydroelectric power plant operated until April 1959.

Today there is a cafe called «Mill» in the former hydroelectric power station building.
