There are several places with chalk pits in Belarus, but the chalk pits near Hrodna are one of the most frequently visited places.
The beautiful Hrodna’s lakes Sińka and Zialionka are ordinary pits where chalk was previously mined. After regular mining, stanks up to fifty meters deep remained, which were gradually filled with groundwater. Thus, artificially created lakes appeared. The unusual color of the lakes (hence the names of Sińka and Zialionka) is explained by the fact that calcium carbonate combines with magnesium carbonate and other chalk compounds, and the output of such combinations are rich colors: from bright blue to deep green.
There are sign plates on the territory of the pits warning that it is prohibited to swim, since the great depth here is combined with steep banks.
