The Lower and Upper Churches are the oldest known Christian churches in Hrodna.

Archaeological excavations were carried out on the territory of the Old Castle in the 1930s. As a result, fragments of the so-called Lower Church were found. In the 14th – first half of the 15th century, the Upper Church was built on its foundation. Historians believe that the construction of the Lower Church dates back to the very beginning of the 12th century. In 1183, the building was struck by lightning and a massive fire broke out. After this tragic incident, the temple was not restored, but the walls of the building continued to stand for a long time.

In the 14th century, Duke Vitaŭt decided to restore the Old Castle. As a result, the ruins of the Lower Church were covered with stone and filled with lime mortar to create a smooth platform. The Upper Church was erected on the indicated foundation. It was a simple square-shaped building with an area of only nine by nine meters. According to historical sources, the Lower Church was more beautiful and richer than the Upper. Decorated natural boulders were located on the facades. Such boulders split into two parts, which were embedded in the walls and polished from time to time. This technology ensures saving of building material.

Everything that has survived to this day from the Lower Church can be seen in the covered part of the Old Castle. The remains of the Upper Church are also kept here.
