The building of the Drama Theater is considered one of the most fantastic Hrodna landmarks.
The first performances began to be staged in Hrodna since the end of the 18th century. At the same time, the building of the city theater was erected by order of Antoni Tyzienhaŭz. Before the 1960s it was expanded with several outbuildings. In 1940, a third floor was added to the theater building.
After the Second World War, the Hrodna Drama Theater began its work in this building. In 1947, in accordance with the decree of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR, the Babrujsk Drama Theater was transferred to Hrodna. As a result, the Hrodna Regional Drama Theater was created. The high level of Hrodna theatrical culture was laid by Mikalaj Kaviazin, a famous theater figure, Honored Artist of Belarus. In 1975, a large-scale reconstruction of the theater building, which made it possible to increase the stage space, was carried out.
In 1984 the artists of the drama theater moved to a new building. The project author of the new building for the Hrodna Regional Drama Theater is the architect Hienadź Mačuĺski. The central entrance is decorated with a sculptural figure group "Pegasus" created by the sculptor Lieanid Ziĺbier. The foyer of two halls is decorated with wall paintings, sculptural and pictorial compositions made by artists and sculptors Uladzimir Niakliudaŭ, Iryna Laŭrova and Ihar Pčeĺnikaŭ. The large hall with an amphitheater and a balcony can accommodate up to 702 spectators, and the small one is designed for 216 seats.
