Orsha is my beloved city, my native mother… – just so a famous Belarusian writer Uladzimir Karatkievič wrote about his native city.
Orsha is proud of its talented landsman. In 1994 a museum “Our famous landsmen” was created in Orša, one of the sections of the exposition of which it was planned to dedicate to Uladzimir Karatkievič. But so far the following year it was suggested by the Union of the writers of Belarus to create just a museum of U. Karatkievič in Orša. So they have done. In 2000 a museum with a small exposition only in one hall was opened. It fitted into the building of an architectural monument of the end of the XIX century and just here a maternity hospital was situated in which in 1930 the future writer was born. On the ground floor of the museum an exposition under the general topic “The portrait of the writer and of the man”. The fragment of the cabinet of his Minsk flat occupies the central part of the exposition of the first hall. In 2005 the second hall dedicated to the literature heritage of our landsman was opened. A scientific-research center works in the museum. Today about 640 items are represented in the exposition. The most valuable of them are the personal effects of the writer, the manuscripts of his works, the drawings of Karatkievič-artist. On the first floor of the museum an art gallery is situated.
