The monument to the great poet Yanka Kupala was installed in the square that bears his name in 1972. The construction of the monument in Minsk was timed to the 90th anniversary of piasniar's birth.

Yanka Kupala (a real name is Ivan Lucevič) was born in 1882 in a Belarusian noble family. His ancestors fought for the liberation of Belarus from the rule of the Russian Empire. The pseudonym "Yanka Kupala" is translated from Church Slavonic as "John the Baptist". This biblical prophet became a model for Yanka Kupala, who saw his own mission as proclaiming the national and spiritual revival of Belarus. His works are imbued with faith in the awakening of Belarus and its independent future. The Belarusian piasniar tragically died in Moscow in 1942.

The monument to Yanka Kupala is located on the main alley of Yanki Kupaly square. It consists of a monumental composition – a sculpture of Yanka Kupala and the "Wreath" fountain, located nearby. Sculptors Anatoĺ Anikiejčyk, Andrej Zaspicki, Lieŭ Humilieŭski, as well as architects Juryj Hradaŭ and Lieanid Lievin worked on the composition project.

A bronze figure of the poet is mounted on a horizontal pedestal (a granite block). The height of the sculpture is 7 meters. Piasniar leans on a staff, his coat is draped over his shoulders. Romantic sublimity, orientation to the future, nobility and human charm are emphasized in his figure and the expression of his face. A spring breaks through at the poet’s feet, and next to it, a fairy-tale fern flower, which is a symbol of eternity, inextinguishable creativity and purity, spread out heavy bronze leaves.
