There is an important archaeological landmark in the city of Dzisna – the ancient Citadel.
In the Middle Ages, a fortified castle was located on an island formed at the confluence of the Dzisna and Dzvina rivers. It arose in 1554, and in the 1570–1580s it was the most important fortification on the Padzvinnie. It consisted of Lower and Upper castles. Both were built of wood and fortified with earthen ramparts. It is known that in 1661 there were 9 towers in the Lower Castle. The most significant of them are Dzvinskaja, Piasočnaja, Dzisienskaja, Svienskaja, Ploskaja, Mocarskaja. In the XVIII century the wooden fortifications of the Dzisna castle were destroyed. Only earthen ramparts have survived to this day. However, the Citadel is an attractive place both for scientists and tourists.
