The mechanical plant in Barań went from a wire-nail manufacture to the radio engineering enterprise.
In 1873, in the Barań estate of Orša povet, a nobleman Mianžynski founded a wire-nail manufacture. A steam engine, machine tools and other equipment were brought to this enterprise from Germany and Switzerland. The production of nails, wire, as well as iron sulfate and springs was established.
In 1918, the enterprise was nationalized by the Soviet authorities and in 1921 received the name «Red October». In subsequent years, the name of the enterprise has been repeatedly changed. From 1952 to 1960, it was a Soviet Union factory with the name «Mailbox №6». In 1961–1966, the enterprise had the name «State instrument-making plant», and from 1966 to 1969 – «State mechanical plant». In 1970, the name «Red October» was returned to the enterprise. In 1991, the plant was renamed into the state-owned industrial firm «Lios». Since 1997, the firm was reorganized into the republican production unitary enterprise «Lios», and since 2009 – into the publicly held corporation «Lios».
In Soviet times, the plant was a secret enterprise. It released military and civilian radio engineering products. Currently it is one of the leading manufacturers of communications, installation and service equipment in the Republic of Belarus.
