Botanical Garden in Minsk
The official name of the Botanical Garden in Minsk is the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. It is a monument of nature and landscape architecture. This is one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe, both in terms of area and composition of collections.
The Botanical Garden in Minsk was founded in 1932. Initially, it occupied an area of 90 hectares, today it has expanded to 153 hectares. The lake in the botanical garden was created in the 1960s.
In 1967, the garden was given the status of a research institute of the Academy of Sciences of BSSR. Today prominent biologists work in the Botanical Garden. Scientific schools are developing, close international cooperation is established.
In the Botanical Garden there are about 10 thousand species of plants from all over the planet, including 2 thousand species and varieties of tropical and subtropical plants. Most exotic plants are located in greenhouses, which were opened in 2007 and thanks to which the Botanical Garden in Minsk is open to visitors in the winter. The Botanical Garden in Minsk is an open-air museum of living plants. The arboretum is famous for its collection of conifers. The trees and bushes in it are located by geographical sectors: North America, Europe, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Crimea, Siberia and the Far East. Unique collections of perennial plants from South America, the Caucasus, Australia, and the Pamirs stand out separately.
On the territory of the Botanical Garden in Minsk there is a "Flowers of the World" exposition. It includes 300 varieties of peonies, 500 varieties of tulips. New varieties of dahlias, lilies, roses, lilacs, daffodils, asters and other flowers were bred in the garden.
The Botanical Garden also has special facilities for butterflies. It is planned that soon beautiful pheasants and peacocks will walk around the garden.
