The coat of arms is a sculpture dedicated to the symbols of Brest, indicating that the citizens of Brest are peaceful and tolerant people (signified by a nocked bow pointing upwards). It also shows that Brest is a multi-national and multi-faith city, where everyone lives in peace and harmony.

Together with autonomy, Brest was granted a coat of arms. The coat of arms was usually found on the stamp which was used by the city council to approve important documents. The current coat of arms was approved in 1991 based on the coat of arms of the XVIII century. On it, a bow with a stretched bowstring and a nocked arrow is pointing upwards. It symbolizes that Brest citizens have no intention to fight with anyone, but any enemy will be met with a rebuff, if necessary.

A pillar with the coats of arms of Brest reflects the heraldic history of the city-on-the-River-Buh. For example, in 1554, a castle at the intersection of two rivers was depicted on the city's coat of arms (Brest castle). Here we can see the current coat of arms of the city, as well as the dates when the Magdeburg Law was granted to Brest.
