Brest Academic Drama Theatre was founded in October 1944. Today the theatre is known not only for its performances, but also for the fact that it has hosted an international theatre festival "White Tower" since 1996.

In August 1940, in Moscow, the on-stage performance group of the Brest Regional Russian Drama Theatre was created by graduates of the State Institute of theatre arts. The performance “Liubov Jarovaja” by Konstantin Trenyov opened the first theatrical season in Brest.

During the Nazi occupation (1941-1944), the theatre continued to operate. However, during the retreat the Germans took the troupe to Germany, and the building was destroyed during the Soviet bombings.

Therefore, the official date of the occurrence of the drama theatre in Brest is October 1, 1944. The troupe was formed by graduates of the Moscow city theatre school. However, Mikalaj Antonavič Mickievič, a Belarusian film director, has been appointed artistic director. On October 10, 1944 the first performance was staged.

In 1946 Juryj Rešymaŭ became chief director of the theatre. From 1949 to 1953 the theatre was headed by Aliaksandr Mironski. A real success and the hallmark of the theatre was a play "The Brest Fortress" by Kanstancin Hubarevič. Its premiere took place on March 19, 1953.

Since 1955, the theatre has been called "Regional drama and musical theatre" and got its own symphony orchestra. In 2005 the staff of the theatre was awarded the title of Honoured team of the Republic of Belarus.

Since 1996 the Brest drama and musical theatre has hosted an International theatre festival "White Tower”. Annually theatres from more than 20 countries take part in the festival programme. The competition programme includes performances of the world and national dramaturgy, experimental drama, outdoor activities, plastic theatre, modern choreography, as well as puppet shows.
