Men’s gymnasium

The building of the men’s gymnasium is an architectural monument of the early ⅩⅩ century. Today the building belongs to the Brest State University.

The men's gymnasium was built in 1904–1905. At the request of the City local authorities from September 25, 1904 it was officially named Aliaksiejeŭskaja in honor of the son of Russian Emperor Nicholas II, Alexei.

In March 1921, Brest became the center of Palieskaje voivodeship as part of Poland. The most prestigious educational institution of Paliessie region – a state gymnasium, which was named after one of the leaders of the uprising of 1863 – 1864 Ramuaĺd Traŭhut – was located in the building of the men’s gymnasium.

In 1939–1941, after the accession of the Western Belarus to the BSSR, a soviet school, and during the World War II a hospital were situated in the gymnasium building.

Since 1946, the teachers' institute has been located in the building. In 1955–1960 the former gymnasium was reconstructed and the third floor was built on.

Today the building of the gymnasium belongs to the Brest State University named after A.S. Pushkin. There are four faculties – philological, of Foreign Languages, of Psychology and Pedagogy and Social and Pedagogical.
