Town Hall is the business card of Viciebsk and its emblem. The Regional Museum is located in the Town Hall building.
The first Town Hall of Viciebsk was founded in 1597. It was a symbol of city independence. City Council, that was elected by people, held meetings there. The building of the first Town Hall standed on the spot for 27 years - until 1624, when the city was deprived of Magdeburg Charter. City Hall was ordered to be disassembled. Only after 20 years the Town Hall was restored.
The wooded Town Hall, according to the documents, repeatedly had been on fire. The building of the brick Town Hall was completed in 1775, and it became compositional center of the square. The architecture of the building united features of baroque and classicism. At various times, the Town Hall housed police, court, a guardhouse, a fire department, a city treasury, a telephone station and City Council. In 1924 the building was given to a local museum. A six-meter copper weathervane of the Town Hall reminds an ancient Russian boat and symbolizes running under sail on the waves of time.
