Hrodna Zoo is the first, largest and back in the day the only zoo in Belarus.
Hrodna Zoo was founded in 1927, when a zoological department was opened in the botanical garden of the male gymnasium.
The history of Hrodna Zoo is closely connected with the activities of an enthusiasts group of the Nature Lovers Community headed by Jan Kachanoŭski, a biology teacher at the male gymnasium named after Adam Mickievič. On his initiative, in 1926, a botanical garden was created in the park (now Žylibier Park) with charitable funds for educational purposes. In the 1927/1928 academic year, a zoological department of the botanical garden was created, which originally housed 17 species of animals of the Belarusian fauna.
After the expansion, the garden was named biological and became a popular place to visit for residents and guests of Hrodna.
Currently, the zoo has over 3000 animals of 317 species. The zoo is located near the railway station and covers an area of more than 5 hectares.
