Memorial sign in honor of Kanstancin Tyškievič's expedition

Count Kanstancin Tyškievič (1806–1868) is one of the founders of Belarusian archeology.

The commemorative sign is a gray boulder with a memorial plaque, which have been installed in 2007 and reflects the path of the Kanstancin Tyškievič’s expeditions. In 2008, a sculptural image of the symbol of the river Vilija – Viĺjana – appeared on the boulder. The author of the sculpture is the Belarusian sculptor U. Slabodčykaŭ. Count Kanstancin Tyškievič (1806–1868) is one of the founders of Belarusian archeology. Being a very wealthy man, he devoted his life to the history, archeology and research of his native land. In 1856, Tyškievič organized an expedition along the Vilija river. During the expedition, he collected rich ethnographic material, based on which he wrote the book “The Vilija and its banks”. The book was published in Dresden after the researcher’s death. Since 2007, the water expedition “The Way of Tyškievič” starts annually from the Viliejka Region. The first expedition was timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Kanstancin Tyškievič’s travel around the Vilija. The travelers followed in the footsteps of Tyškievič’s expedition from the source of the Vilija to its confluence with the Nioman. The organizers and participants of the first water expedition were Lithuanian and Belarusian scientists, ethnographers and tourists.
