One of the best former educational institutions in Belarus.
It was established in eighteen four as a Governorate academic gymnasium of Hrodna for teaching of youth from Brest, Pružany, Kobryn, Vaŭkavysk, Slonim and Hrodna districts. A count Vincent Tyškievič, an owner of Svislač town was funding the gymnasium. In eighteen thirty-four it lost a status of governorate and was made into a district gymnasium, then into a district school and then into a fifth-grade noble school which was closed in eighteen fifty-one. In nineteen forty-four a new educational institution arose – Svislač grammar school and now gymnasium № 1. The gymnasium of Svislač was a pretty large educational institution. And Svislač town was like a student campus. In eighteen sixteen population of the town was six hundred fourteen people and the quantity of teachers and pupils was three hundred twenty-eight. Not only children of local nobility of Vaŭkavysk were coming here but also students from different corners of Hrodna province. Thanks to the charity of Vincent Tyškievič a boarding house was made for them, pupils were assured with textbooks, a laboratory was set up. Education lasted for seven years. Exact sciences, history, languages, in particular Polish, Russian, French, painting, geography, natural sciences, literature were taught here. The gymnasium in Svislač was differentiating by a high level of education and had wide popularity. Among its pupils and teachers there were famous people. Jan Čačot, a participant of association of Philomaths and Philarets, a friend of Adam Mickievič, was teaching geography here for some time. The leaders of the uprising of eighteen sixty-three – eighteen sixty-four Kastuś Kalinoŭski and Ramuaĺd Traŭhut were studying in the gymnasium. Viktar, a brother of Kastuś Kalinoŭski, a painter, a composer and a writer Napalieon Orda and also an excellent scholar, an Orientalist, a participant of the association of philomaths and filarets Vosip Kavalieŭski, a writer, a historian and a folklorist Juzaf Krašeŭski and other known people were studying here. A building of the gymnasium is a monument of Classicism architecture. It has preserved and today it is a part of a complex of a district hospital.
