Site of ancient settlement dating back to the early Middle Ages.

The first mention of Vaŭkavysk in chronicle of Turaŭ dates to one thousand five. Then it was a settlement with very good geographical arrangement. Just here on this hill on so called "Swedish mountain" the embattled settlement was first a fortress which was in control of a princely posadnik. Later the fortress became a castle where a prince, a bodyguard and grand people were placed. This is the highest point among hills of a ridge which closes round Vaŭkavysk. Hillsides are seen from any point of the city. The hight of Swedish mountain at the highest point is thirty-two point five metres. Near the bottom the mountain has the round form. The length of the circle of the bottom is about three hundred fifty metres. In nineteen twenty-five first excavation was carried out on Swedish mountain and a rise attached to it. But almost all collections lost during the Second World War, only vestiges got to funds of Museum of Vaŭkavysk. In nineteen fifty-four scale diggings were carried out. Archaeological evidence obtained here reflex material culture of an oldbelarusian city of the early Middle Ages. Now it finds place in a local museum.
