Church of Saint Casimir

Catholic temple in the centre of the city refers to architecture of the late classicism. The church belongs to a type of basilican temples with three naves.

In sixteen two a catholic temple appeared in Liepieĺ. It was built at the order of Lieŭ Sapieha, one of the most influential statesmen of Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth of the last third of the sixteenth – the first third of the seventeenth century. A village Liepieĺ belonged then to him. The church received a name of Saint Casimir. A wooden church of Saint Casimir was burning not once. Only in eighteen seventy-six already a brick church began its work. In tragic thirties of the twentieth century the church was closed and priests were arrested. Only in sixty years the temple was returned to faithful.
