Since 2009, in the main pedestrian street of Brest a lamplighter has been lighting and extinguishing gas lanterns similar to the lanterns of the XVIII – XIX centuries.
Since 2009, every evening an unusual man appears in Savieckaja pedestrian street in Brest. In a dark blue tunic, in a high cap, with a ladder on his shoulder. As if from a fairy tale by Andersen. A clock and a tinderbox hang on his belt. The man comes to one of street lanterns, sets a ladder and climbs up. After a moment, a bright orange flame jumps in a gaslamp.
Altogether there are 17 ancient lanterns in Savieckaja Street. The time when the lamplighter show up depends on the time of the sunset. As a rule, he appears in the twilight, and finishes his work when it gets quite dark. The exact time can be found on the clock set up specially for this purpose at the beginning of the street, on which it is written "The time of lighting the lanterns ".
The lamplighter doesn’t decline a request to make a photo with him, for now, a true lamplighter in our country can be seen only in Brest.
